‘Backworlds’ Wants Funding, Free Playable Demo Available To Win You Over

The small and charming team behind Backworlds, a genuinely fresh puzzle platformer, are asking for funding over on IndieGoGo and to help convince you of the game’s quality they have provided a free playable demo.

Being as it was my duty and was impressed by the gameplay trailer (see below), I started up Backworlds to give it a whirl. I expected to like it and for it have some flaws perhaps. What I didn’t expect was to not be able to put it down, for it to confuse me, surprise me and then make me feel clever (and a little stupid at times). At the moment the game consists of only a few levels but each of them are well polished to the point where a narrator accompanies your little journey. Even the boss fight at the end of the demo is handled very well.

You play as a weird creature who can move, jump, push and pull things. That’s about it. However, you also control a brush with the mouse and it is with this that the game becomes something more than just another cute puzzle platformer. The brush lets you paint, not in colour, but in different worlds. A back world and a front world to be precise. It is the differences between these worlds which pertain to the game’s surprisingly clever design. The ability to paint the worlds in any way you want adds a whole other level to the gameplay when compared to games that simply let you switch between two different worlds on-the-fly. The gameplay trailer below explains everything much better than I can with mere words.

At the moment in time the developers are looking for funding so that they have the free time to expand the game with more features. More backworld mechanics, interactive objects, carryable objects, and collectibles will be put in. More levels and bonus levels with new environments and the storyline will be worked on too. Achievements an “arcade” mode and a public level editor is also planned. They say they will have many more ideas further down the line too.

Before you decide on how much you want to give these guys, it is imperative that you play the demo first. So you can download the free demo of Backworlds directly from the following links, just choose Windows or alternatively Mac.

The awards for investing in Backworlds, apart from that fuzzy feeling inside, range from copies of the game, to helping design some of the art assets, to receiving some socks or a cap knitted by one of the developers!
