There is something inherently worrying about a tower defence game that immediately reminds me of the old Mars Attacks movie. Despite the resemblance, developer Lightmare went ahead and made Beware Planet Earth, a standard top-down tower defence with an odd premise to say the least.

Earth is being invaded by martians and thankfully it isn’t us they’re wanting to probe, but instead our cows. Yes, our cows; and it is up to you to use plenty of wacky farm machinery inspired turrets and the zapper laser gun to push back the alien menace across over 50 levels.  And these aren’t just your standard martians either, face off against over 20 varieties of martians such as the metalhead and the ninja. Yes, ninja martians.

But that’s not why we are here today. No, the reason we are here today is for the release of Beware Planet Earth’s new veteran mode. See, some people just couldn’t leave well enough alone and decided to taunt the martians after they had successfully driven them off the first time. Now they are back and stronger than ever, offering a challenging new mode of play that critically increases the overall difficulty of the game. The update comes free of charge for anyone who has already purchased the game so there isn’t an excuse to slack off on protecting your cows a second time.

For those of you who haven’t already played Beware Planet Earth, you can check out the demo on Lightmare site or on Desura. You can also pick up the full version of the game as well as any coming content updates for $12.34 on any one of those sites as well.

Okay Stephen, you need to write something witty here that is also relevant to gaming... I’ve been a gamer for years with consoles being my home until I went to university. After quickly running out of money and needing a way to maintain my gaming habits I ran headfirst into Indie games for the first time. I’ve never looked back. Not exactly witty, but a little honesty has never hurt anyone.
