Everyone has that one genre that they despise, really cannot understand why people go out of their way to spend their hard earned cash and time on. For me that is vehicle simulation (flight sims, etc), well how would you feel about creating one of these games in a genre you hate?
It is a novel idea, something that does not instantly jump to mind when you talk about game jams. Usually developers participate in game jams to developer a game they are interested in personally, however this latest jam tried to do things a little differently.
Fuck This Jam aims to get developers to create games in genres they hate (running from November 9th – 17th), but why would this be a good idea. Just think about it you have free rein to really create a new twist on an existing genre. You get to look at it and say “I have always hated this mechanic, how about putting this in to replace it” you can just mix it up, add comedy about why you hate it or even go all dark and serious, maybe in an attempt to undermine it.
Personally I love this twist on the idea for a game jam, and I am sure it will attract a lot of great creatives with awesome ideas on how to reinvent or mock their own personally hated genre. The official site for Fuck This Jam can be found here (twitter). I am sure this will be a whole load of fun for everyone involved and I am really looking forward to seeing what comes out of this event. I am sure there is going to be many gems and comedy gold to boot.
