In today’s Developer Links, the Octodad team discusses their experience with Project Greenlight, the Broken Rules team reports on their polishing and testing phase for Chasing Aurora, and Jonathan Blow vents his frustration about the implementation of a certain interface feature in Windows…

In 2012 Why Is Stealth AI So Poor? (Cliffski.com)
“Is it me or is the AI code in dishonored deeply disappointing? I think the game is pretty good, even if it feels like nothing especially new (although I do like the possession mechanic, and I have to confess I’m not far into the game, just completed my second mission), and I’m sure it is extremely profitable and win awards etc. However, I’m probably it’s worst critic, because not only do I fondly recall the original Thief game, and how long ago it was, but I’m also an ex AAA industry AI programmer.”

Hi! I Am 4 Years Old Today! (2D Boy)
“Hello everyone, this is World of Goo!  I live in San Francisco and I’m 4 years old today.  In video-game years, 4 years is more like 60 human years, but I’m told that my bits haven’t changed at all, and my RGB values are still just as vibrant”

4 Simple Tips For Combating Game Piracy (AltDevBlogADay)
“Game piracy is a huge problem. All app developers suffer from it, but game developers are particularly vulnerable. One acclaimed indie developer suffered a 95% piracy rate for his PC title, and the problem has carried over to many developers on the mobile platforms, especially Android. After months of hard work, one Android developer found that over 40 piracy blogs had picked up his game within 24 hours of launch. Mad Finger Games recently did an interview where they said they saw a 60% piracy rate across iOS and Android. For solo developers or small teams, the best way to combat piracy is to do their best to prevent piracy in the first place. Here’s some anti-piracy tips to make life harder for those swashbuckling app thieves.”

Good Morning Gato # 101 – Gato Is Kind Of Annoying (Ska Studios)
“Most of the time Gato is adorable but there are some moments where she reaches over the adorable line and becomes outright obnoxious. For some reason, both Neko and Gato have been sitting behind my monitors, reaching their paws over to swat at imaginary prey (my tablet pen). It’s all well and cute until the claws come out and into my displays. I’m NOT down with my Wacom Cintiq 21UX sporting cat scratches.”

Octodad’s Green Light (Octodad Blog)
“Creating games can be the best thing in the world. In our case we all get to work with incredibly crazy and creative people who are relentless in making sure we’re crafting a world that others will also find intriguing. Then again at times it has triggered some of the most stressful moments in my entire life. Submitting to the Independent Games Festival…hell, submitting to any festival is always a very anxiety filled process. For me at least I am always left wondering as to whether they received the build of the game or if we screwed up in our submission process. Then there’s the incessant waiting. SO MUCH WAITING. A few weeks or months can feel like it’s been forever. Steam Greenlight has been the latest episode in this series of unknowns and what if’s.”

Friday Flashback #33: Crazy Times! (Broken Rules)
“The long silence on our part can only mean one thing – we’re polishing, polishing, polishing! And when we’re not polishing – we’re testing, testing, testing! This time, though, those tests aren’t conducted with test users but us. We’re actively looking for bugs, mistakes, things to polish, things to fix and while we’re at it – we’re also trying to break it. If we can’t break it, it’s done!”

The Video Game Kickstarter Report – Week of October 12 (Zeboyd Games)
“I had trouble finding projects on kickstarter that I thought looked interesting this week but here’s one - Dysis. It’s a voxel-based RTS game where you can also switch to FPS mode to control your units directly. Has a nice appealing art style (despite its overuse since Minecraft, I really like the voxel look) and it looks like it could be a really fun game when it’s done. Oh and if you donate $10k, the creator will make you your own personalized real life robot (he makes them in his spare time). It’s up to $12k ($10k goal) with 22 days left.”

WM_TOUCH Is Totally Bananas (The Witness)
“…It look me less than 20 minutes to get WM_POINTER working. It took many, many hours to get WM_TOUCH working, because WM_TOUCH is some kind of fully insane mess. None of the insanity seems to be documented, or discussed on the internet, so I am laying it out here in case anyone in the future stumbles into this same trap.”
