2012 IGF Pirate Kart

For those of you that haven’t paid too close attention to the community, you may have noticed that the 2012 Independent Game Festival has started and one particular submission is more unique than the others.

This year, a large collection of smaller games was submitted, known as the 2012 IGF Pirate Kart. The collection found its start on Twitter when independent game developer, BentoSmile, created a post asking why there wasn’t a Pirate Kart yet.

Mike Meyers, also known as ExciteMike by his Twitter followers and creator of games such as Liquid Crystal Crocodile and Matwoga volunteered to collect the submissions together, and thus the IGF Kart was born. “…it didn’t look like it was going to happen because it was such short notice and compiling these things is a lot of work. But, I hated the idea of it not happening for that reason, so I volunteered to compile the games if others sent them. So, everybody got word out that I was accepting games from anyone who wanted to be in it and soon I had an awful lot of games in my inbox,” Mike Meyers said, discussing how the Pirate Kart came to be.

The IGF Pirate Kart is a very large compilation of almost a gigabyte and a half worth of video games that range from multiplayer strategy games to short artistic platformers. The Kart has hundreds of games to play and can be a bit overwhelming to some, however, here are a few suggestions to start you off if you haven’t already delved into the collection.

Quest By BentoSmile

Another product of BentoSmile, Quest is a story about a small blob traveling vertically with another blob, one that talks similar to an NPC giving a player quests. The game is about a five minutes long, but it is certainly a game worth playing, especially coming from the person that helped start the Pirate Kart.

Quest By Ian Brock, Josh Schonstal, and GUerin McMurry

/ Escape \ is a one button action game developed by Ian Brock, Josh Schonstal, and Guerin McMurry. Escape involves going upwards to escape a laser while, at the same time, jumping between two walls. The game can be easily compared to the classic indie game, Gravity Hook, by Adam Atomic and Danny Baranowsky. The game is extremely entertaining and is certainly worth a shot to scratch  that high-score gaming itch.

Super Cult Tyconn 2: Deluxe Edition by Eddie Cameron and Robert Yang

Super Cult Tycoon 2: Deluxe Edition by Eddie Cameron and Robert Yang has you playing as a cult leader attempting to summon the mothership with the help of the acolytes that you recruit with your cult. The game does a great job poking fun at the cat and mouse game between cults in America against the FBI. There’s a bit of micromanagement involved, such as creating a “Crafts Corner” to help fund the cult. There are even PR Buildings to bribe the FBI from investigating if they become too suspicious of your actions. Altogether, the game typically lasts about an hour before the end.

These are a few games that I found interesting among the large collection of games that came in this torrent. While it’s difficult to play all 300 games, these leave a good impression. Remember, that a few of the games aren’t currently playable, but a patch will be released hopefully today. You can go check out the 2012 Pirate Kart over here to try a few of these games out yourself.
