Hero Mages is one hell of an ambitious game. Its sole creator, Ross Przybylski, describes it as a multiplayer fantasy tactical strategy game, and its now available on Android.
Hero Mages may seem fairly run of the mill at first; its target market is rather broad, being stated as fans of the tactical strategy genre as well as fans of collectible card games and fantasy role-playing games. Yep, that’s a lot of people. The game itself operates very much in the way of a fantasy card battle game, except the tabletop is replaced by the screen of a smartphone or tablet. Rolling dice and taking turns to command your little army of card dwelling mages and monsters will be same-old to a lot of you. The single player offers a 5 mission campaign, includes a Quick Battle option that launches a random single-player match against a computer opponent as well as a Custom Battle option where players can customize various game types to their hearts’ content and even track their local statistics.
Battling the AI is all well and good, but nothing quite matches the opposition of another mound of flesh with a brain. Weird creatures, called humans I think. Anyway, Hero Mages allows its players to connect to an online lobby to play against human players in ranked games, free-for-all matches, team games, and most impressively, cooperative player vs. AI battles. Apparently, Hero Mages is also cross-platform compatible, meaning that Android players can play or spectate games being played via computer or (in the very near future) iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad and vice versa. Quite honestly, we were shocked by the multiplayer capacity here, although it is very much desired and built into this genre of course. We salute you Mr. Przybylski!
Not to hype the game up too much or sound like some honkering fanboy who has been paid to say all of this great stuff, but that is impressive for a single guy to pull off. Just saying. Anyway, Hero Mages is available to download for $2.99 from the Android Marketplace. I will put the link below for ease of finger dabbing on your tiny smartphone screens:
