After enjoying huge success and critical acclaim on PC in Autumn of last year, the gore-drenched action game Hotline Miami has finally made its way to PlayStation. The PS3 and PS Vita ports were handled by Dutch outfit Abstraction Games, and both will be available for a single price thanks to cross buy. The price is £6.49 in the UK, €7.99 in Europe, and $8.99 in the U.S, which is no contest for the often-discounted PC original, but by no means a bad deal either.
In terms of control differences, Hotline Miami is said to play more like a twin stick shooter on consoles, whereas the PC version favored keyboard and mouse movement and aiming. Obviously PlayStation’s analogue stick aiming can’t compare to the immediacy of a mouse, which could be jarring for those who have played the game on PC already, but for the most part the PlayStation control setup should provide a comfortable new way to experience the game. Furthermore, some of the Vita’s unique input methods are utilized too — locking on to enemies with the touch screen, for example — which also helps to make the new version seem more fresh and distinct from the PC original.
Further differentiating the PlayStation release of Hotline Miami is the exclusive new mask, ‘Russell the Raging Bull’. This mask replaces the game’s vibrant visuals with a stark monochromatic look, which is a really cool-looking effect.
Whether you’re a newcomer to Hotline Miami‘s dizzying neon and intimidating difficulty, or a veteran of the PC version, the PS3 and PS Vita releases look like great ways to experience the game. You can buy both versions for a single price via the PlayStation Store right now.
