Kickstarter Success ‘Expeditions: Conquistador’ To Come In January 2013

Having reached their Kickstarter goal on September 12, 2012,  independent game development studio Logic Artists is closer to it’s goal of making Expeditions: Conquistador a fully featured game for the PC, Mac, and Linux.  The game, set to be released early next year, features a unique blend of role-playing elements, a branching story, and tactical combat.

Set in 16th century Central America, Expeditions: Conquistador aims to put you firmly in the boots of a Spanish conqueror, featuring period appropriate weaponry, armor, and even topologically accurate maps of the new world.  The story driven campaign and robust dialogue system will require players to make many tough choices.  These choices will often have far reaching consequences that will branch the story, vastly increasing replay value.  Making choices will also affect which characters join your party, as well as determining the outcome of certain random events.  Your decisions don’t have to be made alone, however.  Each character is named, has a personality, and will often offer their opinion when you’re making your choices.  But, as always, diplomacy will only get you so far.

Expeditions: Conquistador will feature a strategic, hex-based combat system much akin to tabletop RPGs.  Presented in an isometric perspective, combat requires decisive movement and greatly rewards good positioning.  The turn based combat is deep and multifaceted, allowing players to use multiple classes, barricades, and even traps.  The battles are also manually designed, rather than randomly generated.  This allows for, “a far greater variety of combat situations”, as well as making the requirements for victory more accurately reflect the scenario surrounding the combat.

“Do you have to eliminate all opposition? Survive for a certain amount of time? Fight your way out of an ambush and escape? Kill an enemy general? Depending on your choices leading up to the fight, you might get completely different versions of the same battle.” –Logic Artists Development Blog

All told, Expeditions: Conquistador is shaping up to be an interesting game, aiming to combine classic RPG decision making, rich storytelling, lively characters, and a deep and rewarding combat system.  With any luck, January 2013 will be another great year for indie games, with Expeditions: Conquistador at the helm.
