Sony have released a few lists that pertain to the top selling indie games on PSN during the year that was 2011. They also made some form of honorary speech towards the indie games and what they bring to the gaming world, stating:
“indie game development provides experiences that no one else can. Whether that experience is an interactive psychology test (TestYourself Psychology), guiding a flower petal on the winds of change (Flower) or razing the countryside as a gold-hoarding dragon (Hoard), PlayStation Network is dedicated to delivering games that push the envelope of our young interactive medium.”
We have been telling them that for years, but we digress, the lists are very interesting if not entirely surprising. The first list is the top 10 best selling indie PSN games of 2011. Note that these are third party self published, in other words ‘pure’ indies to a point. The list looks like this:
1. Limbo (Playdead)
2. Castle Crashers (The Behemoth)
3. TestYourself Psychology (Creat Studios)
4. Marvel Pinball (Zen Studios)
5. Worms 2 Armageddon (Team 17)
6. Dungeon Defenders (Trendy Entertainment)
7. Armageddon Riders (Targem Games)
8. Braid (Number None Inc.)
9. UnderSiege (Seed Studios)
10. Hamsterball (TikGames)
Yes, Limbo came out on top as the best selling PSN indie this last year, and well deserved. Unfortunately the list does not expand beyond that so we cannot inform you how much it actually sold, nor give you an idea of what kind of income Limbo and the rest of them drew for Sony and the developers. That is a mystery Sony are going to let us ponder over a while longer it seems. On to the next list though, which is the top 10 best selling PSN games of 2011 that were published by SCEA. The list is as follows:
1. PixelJunk Shooter 2 (Q-Games)
2. Fat Princess (Titan Studios)
3. Flower (thatgamecompany)
4. Aquatopia (Playlogic Entertainment)
5. Hustle Kings (VooFoo Sudios)
6. Eat Them! (FluffyLogic)
7. Top Darts (Devil’s Details)
8. Super Stardust HD (Housemarque)
9. Linger in Shadows (Plastic)
10. Rag Doll Kung Fu (Qi Studios)
SCEA have committed to putting $20 million into the Pub Fund over the next few years. The Pub Fund concentrates on very small studios which Sony believe have a good idea but need the funding to fully realise it. So here are the top 5 best selling Pub Fund titles of 2011 in this last list:
1. Hoard (Big Sandwich Games)
2. Tales From Space: About a Blob (DrinkBox)
3. Joe Danger (Hello Games)
4. Eufloria (Omni Systems Limited)
5. Explodemon! (Curve Studios)
The post on the Sony blog ends with a message stating that in the coming weeks, Sony will be providing a forum for PSN developers to share their stories in indie game development and why they chose PSN as their lead development platform. May be an interesting read, we will keep an eye and an ear out for you.
