You may have played an air combat simulator before, but believe me when I say you haven’t played anything like this.
Pulp! is all about airships. You know, those massive balloons you see hanging over football fields? Okay, not exactly the same kind of airship. These airships are more like the great ships of the sea floating in outer space, and they are packed with firepower.
There’s two things to like about Pulp! from what I’ve seen so far. The single player campaign follows the story of Riva, a former Commander who was stripped from her post for opposing the decisions of the higher ups. Strong willed and determined to set things right, Riva returns to the skies in order to help Dawn defend themselves from an invading force known as the Duskan’s. A female lead is always a welcome sight to see, plus creators Nectar Games have promised plenty of humour amongst the action to keep things entertaining despite the war based story arc.
Secondly, the customisation options seem to be numerous. You’ll be able to build your own airship and deck it out with a ton of different weapons, from ray guns to traditional cannons and so on. It’s important to constantly alter your ship to best compete with each scenario the game throws at you, with the more missions completed unlocking improved equipment.
As for strategy, if you’ve ever played the wonderful Homeworld, than Pulp! will be very familiar to you. Terrain plays a big part in each battle, though being in space means that attacks can come from any possible position within the 3D play field.
Nectar Games are currently running a Kickstarter campaign to get things up and running towards a future release on PC, Mac and Linux. Right now it’s a single player only title, but with the right level of funding behind it, Nectar hope to include multiplayer options along with even more customisation options.
