Voxeliens

One of the latest indie game trends is voxels so it may be of no surprise to hear that Volumes of Fun‘s newly announced game is a retro-style shooter in a voxel world. Voxeliens takes the classic action of Space Invaders and reinvigorates it as a retro style shooter with a modern look.

The idea of the game, as you should know if you have played Space Invaders, is to defend your planet from waves of descending enemies. Of course there are power ups involved to add an extra layer of excitement to the simple gameplay. The voxel graphics also allow for dynamic destruction as the pesky aliens blast away at your luscious green voxel world. It also means that you can hide under cover and shoot through it at the aliens – you have to think on your feet!

Voxeliens

Volumes of Fun are actually a technology-based company who promoted and developed voxel-based tech, they also released their own PolyVox engine as open source in 2006 which is what Voxeliens runs on. It was only due to a sudden interest in voxel-based games that the developers decided to make their own game. They say of their progression:

“For us it is a massive achievement to have brought the game this close to completion, and we really hope you will join us for the final steps of the journey.”

Voxeliens is due to come out in early 2012 on Windows, Linux and Mac too. It will be available to purchase as a DRM-free direct download from the official website, as well as some established game portals.
