Essentially it is an ambient and more relaxing approach to the real-time strategy genre. You must command tiny seeds to plant themselves on planets but, as is often the case in the genre, an opposing side is fighting for the same turf. The game’s simple palette and minimalist design is what often ignites a fervor in players, especially those seeking art in games.

The developers will be bringing all of the updates and upgrades of the PSN version of the game to the iPad version, which includes new music, new content, new features and a new interface specific to the touchscreen. The developers say they don’t want to give too much away but additional content is on the way, one feature of which will be a new Ambient Mode, which focuses on more “nurturing and growing, relaxing and playing with the new terraforming mechanic.”

<iframe

The relaxing blob-eating game. If you recall Hemisphere Games’ award-winning ambient title you will no doubt be glad to hear of its availability on Android. For those not familiar with the title, now is the chance to change that around!

Now available on basically every platform that isn’t a console, Osmos is absorbing or being absorbed in practically every direction. Its latest release is on the Android Market where it can be found for a mere $2.99 (40% off) for the first week of its launch, so hurry! If you don’t want to commit to the full version straight off though, you can test the game out by downloading the demo.

Primarily I would point you to our review of Osmos to find out more information and how good we think it is. Of course, it’s probably not as good as Osmosis Jones; you know, the part animated, part live-action flick? Bah, it’s wasted on you. Anyway, if you could not possibly dispense the effort of reading our review for that would require far too much effort, here is a brief description of Osmos from the developers and a relaxing trailer for your viewing:

“Your objective is to grow by absorbing other motes. Propel yourself by ejecting matter behind you. But be wise: ejecting matter also shrinks you. Relax…good things come to those who wait.”

Eufloria’s ambient gameplay, artsy visual style and unique setting of fighting seedlings on asteroids are all positives. Unfortunately, this unique spin on Real Time Strategy never really came together for me gameplay wise. The ambient world is very enjoyable, but simplistic gameplay plagues this game’s potential. It uniqueness certainly warrants a try, but at $20 this isn’t for everyone.

Andrew: 8
Eufloria wins big points with me for being not just a unique (finally) take on the RTS genre, but also for having a gorgeous visual style that sets it apart from every other game on the market. The unique RTS style is interesting, but not entirely successful. The demo doesn’t show any need for much strategy other than attacking en-masse, although the last level hints that may change later in the game. The final product has the potential to turn out utterly brilliant, but as of now I remain a bit skeptical.

Peter: 8
Fighting flora is at the center of Eufloria. A race of grey seedlings competes with your seedlings to colonize habitable asteroids. The game is sparse and laid back, with uncomplicated space battles you can control with one hand. Your seedlings turn into trees that defend the asteroids or produce more seedlings, which then travel to other asteroids to battle bad seeds or populate. The demo is fun, but doesn’t offer much of a challenge. Just wait and build up an army of seedlings because the grey seeds don’t seem to fight back. If they did, Eufloria could be very interesting.
