Today, Steam launched a nine day sale featuring indie games. The well-timed Indie Spring Sale will overlap both PAX East and the 2013 IGF awards.

The sale page is a little misleading, though. The page claims “hundreds of games” are on sale, though when you click through the banners and get into the sale page, there are only six games featured, and broken down into the PAX and IGF categories there are only twenty more total. I imagine Steam will shuffle through the entire list, daily, throughout the duration of the sale…but it is unlike Valve to make it difficult to find sales. Luckily you can search for “indie” in the store and it will aggregate all of Steams indie titles, for easy viewing.

Some of today’s featured titles include:

Guns of Icarus Online – 75% off – $4.99
Capsized – 70% off – $2.99
Awesomenauts – 50% off – $4.99
Gish – 75% off – $2.49
Samorost2 – 70% off – $1.49

Some other deals that caught my eye while browsing through the full list:

NightSky – 80% off – $1.99
Terraria – 75% off – $2.49
Dungeons of Dredmor – 50% off – $2.49
Trine – 75% off – $2.49

Visit the Steam Store Indie Spring Sale page, to see the featured titles (which can be speculated to rotate once a day), alternatively one can also view all of the games on sale by searching for the term “indie” in the store, or simply by clicking this link.

The Indie Spring Sale comes a day after the announcement that Steam would begin selling alpha builds of games, that people can get continually updated, as the developer furthers progress on completing the game. Some of the first titles included in Steam’s Early Access program include Gnomoria, Under the Ocean, and StarForge.

Merge Games has announced that it will be offering indie box sets of three classic indie titles including ‘Botanicula’, ‘Chaos on Deponia’, and ‘The Basement Collection’. All three are available from Merge Games official website. Included with each title will be a disk version of the game and a few collectible goodies, such as art, soundtracks, Steam keys for ‘Botanicula’ and ‘Chaos on Deponia’, and a copy of ‘Indie Game: The Movie’ with ‘The Basement Collection’.

‘Botanicula’ and ‘Deponia’ are available for shipment immediately, while ‘The Basement Collection’ will not be available for shipment until March 8th. ‘The Basement Collection’ will also include a collectible concept art booklet, featuring the iconic art of Edmund McMillen, creator of indie classics ‘Super Meat Boy’ and ‘The Binding of Isaac’. ‘Chaos on Deponia’ will include a soundtrack and exclusive sticker. ‘Botanicula’ will ship with a soundtrack and a few pieces of concept art.

Merge Games is offering all three games separately, but will provide discounts for those who decide to buy multiple games. The offer provides the sought after “collector’s edition”, which has gained popularity in recent years, but is often not produced for indie games.

All three games were released last year and could be considered the “creme de la crop” of last years releases. If you want more info on the titles featured in the sale you can check out our review of ‘Chaos on Deponia’, our ‘Botanicula’ review, and our ‘The Basement Collection’ review; all of which received ratings well over 90%.

As part of Sony’s ongoing ’12 Deals of Christmas’ promotion, two of the most successful games on the PlayStation Network have been bundled together for a bargain price. Journey and The Unfinished Swan both received critical plaudits upon their release, and they’re now available in one package for a reduced price of £9.99 / €12.99. Unfortunately, the promotion is only available on the EU PlayStation Store, as Sony continue their inexplicable regional division of content.

Maybe Journey and The Unfinished Swan’s status as indie games is questionable, as their development was funded and supported by Sony. But let’s not argue about such petty issues – they are two of the most creative and unique experiences of 2012, and they’re now available for a fantastic price. Anyone with even a vague interest in the artistic side of games will find something to love in The Gaming Wonders Bundle.

Both titles innovate in their own ways. Journey features a transformative online co-op experience, which manages to make the player feel genuine attachment with an anonymous gamer via the shared experience of the game. Meanwhile, The Unfinished Swan‘s main hook is it’s unusual and stylish visual design, and the unique paint-splashing mechanic which is used to expose the world around you. If you’ve missed out on these two titles so far, this is the best chance to invest you are likely to get.

GameFly is hosting another Indie Weekend Sale. Starting today, buyers can choose from eight different titles, some as cheap as $2.49.

The sale includes:

Torchlight – $3.75
Osmos – $2.49
Gratuitous Space Battles – $7.49
Dungeon Defenders – $2.99
Nuclear Dawn – $8.99
Space Pirates and Zombies – $2.49
Terrorhedron 3D – $2.49
Symphony – $4.99

Torchlight is probably the most recognizable off of the list, as its sequel, Torchlight 2 was released this past September. Torchlight is an action-RPG developed by Runic Games and released in 2009 and caries a solid 83/100 on Metacritic.

Osmos is a puzzler where players try to absorb smaller organisms into their own bubble-like single-celled organism, while avoiding being absorbed by the larger organisms floating around. Osmos was developed by Hemisphere Games and released in 2009.

Gratuitous Space Battles allows players to construct their own space fleet and set off to wage war against opponent’s fleets. Gratuitous Space Battles was developed by Positech Games and was released in 2009.

Dungeon Defenders is a tower-defense action-RPG hybrid where players work together to keep crystals from being destroyed by recurring waves of monsters. Dungeon Defenders released in 2010, and was developed by Trendy Entertainment.

Nuclear Dawn is a first-person RTS that has players battling it out using four different soldier classes and a wide arsenal of weaponry. One player on each team gets an overall map view, similar to what one would get in an RTS, from there that commander can direct the rest of the team, who are playing in first-person mode. Nuclear Dawn released in 2011, and was developed by Interwave Studios.

Space Pirates and Zombies is an RTS based around space combat with randomly generated galaxies to explore. The game was developed by MinMax Games and released in 2011.

Terrorhedron 3D is a tower-defense game which was released in 2011. Developed by Danial Walters, Terrorhedron 3D presents players with a 3D tower defense layout, with online co-op capabilities.

Symphony is a music-driven side-shooter developed by Empty Clip Studios. Players can upload their own music to play the levels generated for that particular song. Symphony was released this past August.

Frozenbyte, Remedy Entertainment, Recoil Games and Almost Human have teamed up to create the Autumn Seal special.

You may remember the Summer Seal from earlier this year that featured discounts on just Frozenbyte games. This time, on top of offering discount coupons for every edition of Trine and Trine 2, also available are discount codes for Alan Wake Collectors Edition, Alan Wake: American Nightmare, Rochard, and Legend of Grimrock.

“All of the games involved are from Finnish developers that have been doing quite well on Steam and with the success of Frozenbyte’s Summer Seal in July, we wanted to invite some friends in for another round. Just our way of getting to hang out with peers, give away coupons and stream awesome games”, said Mikael Haveri, the Marketing Manager of Frozenbyte, in the press release.

To participate in the Autumn Seal special, simply visit the Autumn Seal website and start playing the game of chance. Participants will see a slot machine that they can click to begin playing. If three pictures of seals match up…a random Steam coupon is won.

After ten spins, the slot machine locks up for a set amount of time. Players can partake as much as they wish, but will have to wait a bit every ten spins.

I have spun thirty times, and won one code. So while winning isn’t impossible, it isn’t super common. But, hey, that’s just part of the fun.

The coupons are redeemable on Steam up to November 20th, so they expire ten days from now.

The Autumn Seal is in no way affiliated with Valve nor should it be considered a Steam Sale.

Visit the Autumn Seal website and get to spinning, today.

For the month of November, Spiderweb Software is holding a 50%-Off sale on everything in their store.

“November is a time of great sadness,” said Spiderweb Software in the press-release. “The nights are long. Seattle is a damp, unending gray. Mildew. And nobody buys our games, because why bother when the holidays are just around the corner?”

So to warm up customers, Spiderweb Software stuck a big, bright, shiny, “50% Off” tag on to everything in the store.

For iPad useres, on the weekend of November 16th, look for Avadon: The Black Fortress HD to be 50%-off in the iTunes store, and the following weekend, Avernum: Escape From the Pit HD will also go on sale for 50%-off.

Spiderweb Software produces story-focused RPGs for Windows, Mac, and the iPad. The Avadon series, the Avernum series, and the Geneforge series are some of Spiderweb Software’s latest games, and are all on sale.

Avadon lets players choose to play as the role of Blademaster, a Shadowwalker, a Shaman, or a Sorceress, and they must lead a group of warriors to defend the Pact, and ensure peace resonates through the kingdom, once more.

In the Avernum series, the game focuses on an underground kingdom, formed by abandoned prisoners and criminals, who are trying to unite to form a nation, and fight away the cruel surface dwellers.

There are many other titles available for sale, Avernum alone is a six-title game, so check out the Spiderweb Software store and see if anything catches your eye. Remember, the half-off discount will apply at checkout, so the prices you see will what the sale takes from.

Follow Spiderweb Software on Facebook, and visit their official website for extras such as full-world maps, forums, cheat codes, and more.

It wouldn’t be a holiday without a big Steam sale, and Halloween is certainly no exception. Between now and October 31st there are a ton of goodies you can pick up on the cheap and the good news is there are some great indie games involved.

Here is a quick run through of some of the games that, if you have not played them yet, will make your Halloween a little scarier. Remember, prices will vary depending on your region:

Atom Zombie Smasher (75% OFF)- A strategy game that has players rescuing as many survivors from the incoming zombie plague as possible. There is no-run-and-gun here, players will have to plan the escape in order to maintain order within the chaos.

Orcs Must Die 2 (50% OFF) – Orcs are ugly, let’s be honest. So why not wipe them off the map by placing some cunning traps along narrow corridors, whilst wielding deadly weapons and magic to keep the horde at bay. The original Orcs Must Die is also on sale!

They Bleed Pixels (66% OFF) – Developers Spooky Squid Games are adding a brand new themed level to the game, so now is a better time than any to get in on the pixelated action.

The Adventures of Shuggy (50% OFF) – Okay, so Shuggy isn’t exactly scary, but he’s entirely addictive and worth playing, especially at this price and with some new free DLC on the way too!

Space Pirates and Zombies (75% OFF) – Affectionately dubbed ‘SPAZ‘, this space shooter mixed with a little strategy will keep you on your toes well into the late night, allowing you to completely ignore the Vampires at your door. You may also recall it won an IGM award for best Computer Game of the Year last year as voted by you!

Tales from Space: Mutant Blob Attacks (50% OFF) – This little platformer made a name for itself on the PSVita, but why not grab it on the cheap for your PC and give it a go, rampaging across the colorful landscape as an unstoppable blob.

In this day and age, a level editor without some kind of integrated sharing framework just seems like a waste of effort. With so many level packs and mods out there, it really helps to bring down the barriers between players and user-made content. The past few years have brought great leaps and bounds in that direction, and the growth of Steam Workshop integration across a range of mainstream and indie games really lends weight to that. Today, the charming and clever puzzle-platformer Blocks That Matter added full Workshop support, and to celebrate, it’s half-off for today only. Go grab it.

For those who didn’t catch sight of the game first time round (it was featured in at least on Humble Indie Bundle, so you might already own it – go check, I’ll wait), it’s a rather ingenious piece of design. A fairly simple platformer at first glance, but you soon gain access to a combination of block-based superpowers: Mining bricks ala Minecraft, and placing them in the form of Tetris pieces. The concepts are carried further by the story of the game – you play as an experimental robot designed as a collaboration between Alexy Pajitnov and Markus Persson. See? Blocks really do matter!

Right now there’s only ~25 new levels on the workshop, but that number will undoubtedly grow. The developers have also added several new packs of levels since the original release of the game on Xbox Live Indie Games a couple years back. The level editor is easy to use, and really is only limited by your ability to come up with interesting puzzles. Give it a shot, and share your creations in the comment box below. Maybe even produce something for IGM, eh? Just a thought…
