/> New Star Games’ Super Laser Racer is a racing game if you couldn’t tell by the name. In addition to using your tricked out racing skills, the player also uses missiles, lasers, bombs, et al to achieve racing dominance. The demo offers a few race tracks to choose from and a few different ship designs. An added feature in the full version is the ability to design your own tracks and unlock better ships. Sound effects/quality were all good and the graphics were brilliantly colorful. Who knew “outer geometric space” could look so sleek. It was almost like being stuck in a rave. I’m not a huge racing game fan, but I’ll admit I had fun playing this one.

Mike: 6.5/10
SLR left my wrist cramped. Sadly this had more to do with the keyboard controls than the action onscreen. Super Laser Racer is a top-down racing game with geometry wars style graphics and Wipeout-esque weapons. The music and sound work great with the title and the game serves it’s purpose and does a good job being an arcade racer. It’s a little skimpy on features: 3 Race modes, 12 tracks. SLR’s core over-the-top racing and controls are a bit retro (some may say outdated) and so are its features. If you can get over this, SLR is a good arcade racer.

Foosball Maniac Review

review

arcade

D

PC Game

sports
<guid

But is it worth the asking price of $10? No.

That’s not really the fault of the small two-man team, Cybertron BT, but this game simply doesn’t give enough to be worth $10. There is nothing to the game besides a simple single-player mode, with computer opponents of increasing difficulty unlocking one after the other as you beat them in 5-point games. Were it not for the game’s technically impossible difficulty level, (more on that later), the game might only take you an hour to beat. Without any modes or added value beyond the single-player campaign, the game isn’t worth playing as much more than freeware.

Foosball is not a computer-friendly game. The game was meant to be a physical way to play soccer (football) inside your home, and it just doesn’t work very well with video game controls. In real life, you have to use both hands, spinning and switching between the control rods, which is already awkward to coordinate for many people. The rod-spinning dynamics don’t map well to a keyboard, joystick, or even console game controller, so in any video game version of foosball, you’re left either barely able to hit the ball, unable to switch between rods well enough, or in the case of this game, still handicapped by the fact you can only move one rod at a time. This game does the best job of any foosball video game I’ve ever played at letting you control things, and yet it’s still frustrating. My typical foosball strategy is to keep one hand on the goalie rod to bat away any sudden strikes on my goal, and that’s just impossible in this or any other foosball game.

Each computer opponent is introduced through a glmour shot and a three-sentence bio, all of which boil down to “This opponent is slightly harder to beat than the last one”. The two-level demo gives you possibly all you’ll ever need of the game, given just how difficult the computer opponents get after that. The first two or so opponents will hardly touch the ball, and yet they can still beat you through your own goals alone. This breaks the typical game design maxim “Look hard, but play easy.” The computer plays like a toddler, and yet it’s still difficult to beat, even in the first levels. The game’s website even says that no one has apparently ever beaten the final level, so I guess they can advertise that you could spend an eternity on this game and never beat it, which is actually good.

There’s not much more to the game. It looks fine, and plays better than any other foosball video game I’ve seen (more than one song would have been nice, though) but there’s not enough content and the base game isn’t very satisfying. This is probably why EA is making all of its money off of FIFA and not ITSF (look it up).
<a

It has a strangely clunky user interface that in the end made me end-task to close the thing down. I couldn’t really figure out what was going on with the team management thing. Casinos? Eh? What’s that got to do with racing? I suppose you’d probably understand it better if you were a Max Power reading Formula 1 addict type. As for myself, I didn’t really get it. The car was abominably hard to control at first too. That is, until I bashed it good and proper a few times, and then it slowed
down to a manageable sort of speed. I think you’d have to be a proper fan of top-down 2D racing games and Formula 1 nerdery to like this one.

Steve: 4

New Star GP is a top down racing game that reminds me of the old Micro-Machines game for NES combined with some of the depth of Gran Turismo. Practice racing the track during the week and then dominate on race-day in order to build up cash. You’re responsible for managing the attributes of your ride, finances, fuel levels, and weather to maximize your winnings. There’s a fun casino minigame, track editor, and many cars to buy; the biggest thing missing is multiplayer

Mike: 4

New Star Grand Prix is not for everybody. The game is a top-down Formula 1 racing game with some substantial RPG & strategy elements. The game reminded me a little of the Kudos series in that you can pick from an assortment of activities for each day. You can choose to practice the racetrack, go out with friends, gamble at the casino, etc. That aspect of the game adds a lot of depth, but the problem is that the core racing gameplay is not that thrilling. The game may be worth a lap around the track for fans of the genre or Formula 1 gearheads.

Zak: 4

New Star GP from New Star Games downloaded easy enough, but the game seemed to crash every time I went to play it. I can’t find faults with the graphics, but wish I was able to get past the title screen and into the game.

New Star Soccer 4 Review

review

C

mac game

PC Game

RPG

sim

sports
<guid

It also encompasses RPG elements that which you might find on championship manager or an alternate version of it.

You begin the game with some basic character designing: hair color, eye color, height and weight. The last two of these actually affect your character’s ability as a player through the use of fitness attributes such as strength, acceleration and pace. After this you have a number of points which you can apply to a selection of skills and reinforce your player’s talents. Interestingly, you’re asked a few personality questions as well. I was impressed with the number of teams available to you. Not only is every country is playable, but every single major club within that country. Though, the team names are changed, for copyright purposes. Being from Cambridge, England, I chose to play as “Cembridge United”. Each team has its own kit, but I’m sure if you were to cross reference the kits, you would find many of them to be the same. The kit design is rather basic… In fact, everything about this game is basic.

Graphically, the menus are pretty enough: plain interfaces labeled with colorful bars indicating your levels of fitness, how much energy you have, etc. There’s even a pretty globe spinning in the background that somewhat resembles Google Earth. However, the simplicity of the design isn’t as appreciated within a match. The characters’ blocky appearance makes every player look the same and the pitch is without any real attention to detail. The crowds in the stands are stationary and the only really nice touches are the boards around the edges of the pitch advertising various websites and games obviously affiliated with New Star Games. The game is a vast improvement over the 2D stylings of New Star’s soccer games before hand so it’s nice to see that they’re progressing.

Build your Soccer Career in this addictive title

The gameplay feels clunky and lifeless, chasing the ball around only to have it kicked off to the other side of the field where you will once again have to run after it. You rely mostly on your team members passing the ball to you through a “HEY, PASS ME THE BALL!” command which is sort of cute and similar to the recent FIFA game if my sources are accurate. I failed to get hold of the ball more than a few times without using this feature though.

The audio effects don’t do much to inspire you to carry on playing. Some very basic whistle sounds are used to indicate a fowl or a half/full time. The crowds can be heard constantly, but only a continuous dull roar, although if you listen carefully, you can hear the occasional soccer chant being called out by the fans. All in all, the audio seems a half hearted attempt at creating an atmosphere. On the other hand, this is dreamy compared to the music that’s forced upon you in the menu screens when you’re managing your player; a ridiculous, fast paced, Brazilian beat slammed on repeat for your ears to bleed to. It’s a shame because these menu screens, although a sidetrack to the game, are actually where I found myself spending most of my time playing.

The RPG elements really come into play. You manage your free time and energy as a player outside of work. You can choose to spend time with friends and family or your fans and team. Ignoring any one of them will have negative effects on you (such as being stuck on the bench if your team starts to dislike you). You can even get yourself a girlfriend if you’re at all interested in doing so. You have a player profile with statistics that you can improve as you go through the game. Train your fitness attributes by doing laps, working the exercise bike, etc, but first you will have to have enough money to purchase the equipment (Who knows what’s wrong with the gym). You can also boost your performance with energy drinks, performance enhancers and, oddly enough, alcohol, though these all have side effects including a friendly trip to rehabilitation. A nice touch I think. You have a finances page in which you can follow what you’re spending your money on and truly live the life of a football star. You can purchase property and vehicles. Transport choices ranges from roller skates – though I’ve never seen a soccer player on roller skates in my life – to your own private jet at a substantially higher fee. You can keep track of what you’re being paid for and your sponsorship deals, though obviously you don’t start with anything except a basic wage.

There are also some mini games available. These are split between training like dribbling around cones and shooting practice, to gambling games such as blackjack, roulette and the slot machines to make (or lose) money. Finally, you can bet money on horse races and if you make enough, purchase your own horses and stables to race your own. I can see the game being – if you can deal with its faults – very satisfying as your character progress’ up the ranks and becomes successful. Since you’re able to purchase bigger and better things and everybody loves you. I also have a sneaky suspicion that this game is intended to be played with a joystick. It just doesn’t feel right with a keyboard and mouse though this isn’t indicated anywhere prior to the download.

On the plus side, if you do like the game, there’s an awful lot to do. As far as I can tell there’s no limit to the amount of matches you can complete and money you can make as well as a number of competitions. There’s a huge list of achievements for you to try and collect, some of which seem very difficult (to me at least). To sum up, this game is lacking. It’s worth playing. If you are a serious soccer enthusiast and fancy supporting an underdog instead of a big gun then perhaps worth purchasing, but I, as a player not in love with the genre found it difficult to grasp, be absorbed by and enjoy. It’ saving grace being that there are other things to do besides playing soccer.

A 2nd Opinion by Mike

New Star Soccer 4 is a highly praised Sports/Sim Game that should not be faulted for its RPG focus over sports action. NSS4 is about controlling 1 rising football star to glory. While the 3D graphics are blocky, it’s unfair to expect an indie developer to recreate real life players and offer the graphical prowess of large studio titles. This game is a very in-depth simulation game that resembles an RPG more than a sports soccer title. Ultimately, there’s nothing more rewarding than having your country call on you to compete in the World Cup. This game is certainly not for everyone, but it is a unique experience. The game offers incredible depth and if the description has you are a soccer/football fan, you’ll probably have a hard time putting this game down.

Addictive Football Review

review

arcade

C

PC Game

sports
<guid

Much like the old FIFA’s, the Addictive Football is very easy to pick up and play…and very fun to play against a rival or friend. Addictive 24/7 definitely succeeds in making a…well…addictive game. It lacks real teams, players, etc. but that’s to be expected. It may not be for everyone at $20, but is certainly a deal at $9.95.

Gameplay: 8/10
Pros: Ah the simplicity of the 16-bit era, Controls are simple: pass, shoot, and move- and work well. The goalies are smart and surprisingly adept. Easy to pick up and play and great with a friend.
Cons: I found the players moved sort of slow. The AI was a little too good for my tastes. My biggest gripe though was the lack of a defensive tackle or similar ability…it’s a fun little football game and there’s no reason there can’t be some tackling look at Mario Strikers- you can push and tackle anybody…and it makes it really fun.

Graphics: 7/10
Pros: Clean graphics, with easily discernable teams and players. The ball is easy to follow and the graphics are very much in the 16-bit vein with a higher pixel count. I particularly liked the menus as well.
Cons: Player models are a bit goofy and kiddy (in the menus and in the celebration GOAL Window). Definite lack of WOW factor and variety in the graphics.

Sound/Music: 8/10
Pros: Fits the style of the game and blends really well with the gameplay and theme. Music definitely gets your heart pumping for competition. I was also fond of the kick and other ball sounds.
Cons: Sufficient sound, but again there is sort of a lack of variety and focus in the sound/music department. Everything, but the theme/menu music and ball sounds fades from memory.

Lasting Appeal: 8.5/10
Pros: 4 types of pitches, 10 teams, and 5 different gamemodes. The best of all of this is the Custom mode which allows you to set the skills of your own players and create your own team. Multiplayer is really fun as mentioned above.
Cons: The variety of levels to play in is the biggest detractor. I would’ve liked to see a little more fantastic and fun pitches…like an Ice themed Stadium or Lava and whatnot. This game isn’t really a football sim, it’s about being fun and I think some extreme pitches would’ve really helped the variety and lasting appeal. Online Multiplayer would’ve skyrocketed this score to a 10, but with Indie titles I understand the lack of resources and development teams to achieve this.

Average: 78.75%
Tilt: +0.25%

This game definitely delivers in the addictive department and is VERY fun against a friend. It totally took me back a decade playing my friends in similar games at each others houses every weekend (I am still a mean MK2 player). For $10 it’s a real value and a great buy…at $20 I think the value depends on if you even know what a Genesis is and if you are a particular fan of Football (soccer) games or sports games in general. All in all, Addictive football is a very light and fun game.

<span

It’s just tremendous fun. It is the only game I have played in the last 24 hours (which says a lot trust me) and I only took breaks to take notes, sleep, eat and the like. During one of my breaks, I headed over to Gametunnel.com and realized that MiniGolf Mania is #2 best sports game of the year…so I’m not the only one. This game is very deserving of not only a demo download, but a purchase.

Gameplay: 8.5/10
Pros: Tons of zany power-ups, outlandish holes, obstacles, etc. My favorite feature has to be the special ability balls, which add a touch of twitch gameplay. Basically, after hitting one of these balls you can click to activate it’s ability…my favorite is the nudge backwards…this basically reverses the ball in real time. Once I got this ball, my scores drastically improved along with the fun I was having.
Cons: I wish there was a camera more like Hot Shots Golf, where you could see the contours and easily rotate the camera and look around. The Fly-by is sufficient, but I wanted more control with the arrow keys or something. I also would have preferred that the putting interface was a hold (to draw the putter back) and release (to hit) interface rather than a double click. It is hard to measure power and distance at first and the cup can be unforgiving.

Pros: Love the cartoon / handdrawn looking backgrounds. The 3-D engine is very attractive despite its simplicity…Torque consistently pops up in games that impress me visually (see Marble Blast). The crazy boost blasters and bounce pads look great and add to the zany feel. Playing the game sort of feels like you are in some crazy, zany world with wacky & fun physics.
Cons: Some of the polygons and backgrounds outside the hole (monochrome sand) detract from the feel. Safari animals do not fit the visual feel of the game and seem out of place…I was expecting more cartoonish and free-roaming animals.

Sound/Music: 8/10
Pros: Music is good, subdued, and well-suited to golf. Noises of the clinking ball are spot on.
Cons: Nothing really stands out as bad, there’s just nothing exceptional to warrant above the solid-good range.

Lasting Appeal: 8.5/10
Pros: Game is FUN to play. 3 Courses and a 9-hole tutorial can entertain you for awhile with their multiple modes, wacky design, and ability balls definitely warrant the price of admission. The worldwide rankings and ability to enter a name/password and then collect points really motivates you to keep playing.
Cons: Could definitely have used another course especially since the gameplay is rather quick and you can breeze through one fairly quickly. I would have also liked to see some online matchmaking or head to head.

Average: 85.00%
Tilt: +3.00%

The game is instantly accessible and very enjoyable and when a game is really fun, you always want more of it and really can’t hold it against the game. The game delivers in the fun department and that’s what’s important. TopMeadow definitely deserved the #2 spot for best Sports game of ’06.
