The Too Many Games Expo was this weekend and I checked it out on Friday. It felt disjointed to me. Too Many Games is part flea market, half gaming LAN party, part table-top gaming with a dash of an indie games thrown in for good measure. The focus certainly wasn’t on the indie game developers and they were oddly placed surrounding the game marketplace. I don’t think gamers browsing for Atari 2600 games are that interested in the Indie Gaming Scene, but maybe it was just a slow Friday.

The PC Lan Party was very busy

There were a wide range of Indie Game Developers there from the professional Cipher Prime Studios to the amateurish Point of Descent by BM&G.  There were two games in development that I was able to play that did pique my interest though.

The best and most promising indie game that I discovered at the show was Word Fighter by Feel Every Yummy.  Word Fighter is Boggle meets Street Fighter and is coming to iOS and Android. You face off against other players spelling words.  The longer the word, the more damage that you do.  There’s even power-ups thrown in for good measure.  Don’t let the above screenshot fool you though.  The developer was showing off new characters inspired by authors at the show.   You’ll be playing as Edgar Allen Poe and Agatha Christie when this game comes out.  I was told the game will support turn-based games in the future (think Words with Friends) so there’s a lot to get excited about.  It already plays great.

Mighty Rabbit Studios Saturday Morning RPG also shows a lot of promise especially if you grew up in the 1980s.  The gameplay is standard Japan RPG fare, but the nostalgia and humor that permeates the game definitely brought a smile to my face.  The battles are made more enjoyable with Care Bear Stare and Optimus Prime attacks.  You use objects that you find around the world and store in your trapper keeper as weapons – so even a paper plane can be lethal.  The game still has some technical issues, most notably the movement controls, but nothing major that takes away from the humor and refreshing concept.  Saturday Morning RPG will be Episodic and coming to Apple’s iPad.
