I think I’m playing as a walnut.

“Whakman” is a platformer with simple controls and well-done artwork. Forward, backward, bounce, dash. Timing, angles, and strategy are key. It’s frustrating in the most fun way.

The objective is to collect all the yellow things. There’s a tally at the top that tells you how many of the total available you’ve got so far. Also, kill the skulls and don’t drown or touch the spikes. Every time you die your life meter gains a skull. For a while I thought it was about the number or skulls I was killing but I hadn’t encountered seven skulls at that point. Deaths on the other hand…

I try and fail and try and fail again. My husband offers to “see what he can do.” I respond with swears and elbows. I got this. I died like seven times, but I got it eventually.

Somehow this simple bouncing underground Whakman was way more fun than the Sonic trial. This was one of the most fun trials I’ve played in a long time. I wasn’t reading excessive amounts of story. I didn’t find myself confused by my objective or abilities. I just played.

The only downside, in my opinion, is that this game seems a bit lacking for an xbox game. It would be a perfect app or handheld game. But on the Xbox in HD, I kind of felt wasteful.

The weird little Whakman is adorable and the game is glitch free and well worth buying for its very low price.
