Welcome to IGM’s 2nd Annual Game of the Year Awards. Last year we got an awesome response to our reader’s choice awards and polled over 750 readers. This year the votes poured in and more than doubled. Over 1550 (unique) readers voted for their favorite indie games and helped decide the best indie games of 2011. Here are the results of the Readers’ Choice:

Best PSN Game:

  1. Dungeon Defenders (31%)
  2. PixelJunk Shooter 2 (16%)
  3. Rochard (13%)
  4. Eufloria (13%)
  5. Sideway: NY (4%)
  6. Rocketbirds (4%)

With 31% of the Vote, Dungeon Defenders decimated the competition.  Part tower defense and part 3rd person action game, Dungeon Defenders is a unique blend of game genres.  Featuring 4 different character classes, this game was built for multiplayer mayhem.

Best XBLA Game:

  1. Bastion (41%)
  2. Rock of Ages (14%)
  3. Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet (9%)
  4. Outland (8%)
  5. Ms. Splosion Man (6%)
  6. Dishwasher: Vampire Smile (3%)

Bastion won big in this category by one of the largest margins receiving 41% of the vote. Bastion trounced the competition because of its solid action RPG gameplay and its exemplary storytelling and graphics.  Bastion grabs your attention when you first boot it up with its beautiful watercolor visuals and incredible narrator.  It keeps your attention with its constant flow of new weaponry.

  2. Ninja War: Stolen Scrolls (17%)
  3. Doom & Destiny (11%)
  4. Raventhorne (8%)
  5. T.E.C. 3001 (6%)
  6. Astralia (5%)

Speedrunner (18%) just edged out Ninja Wars: Stolen Scrolls (17%) by only 14 votes.

Best Mobile Game

  1. Super Brothers: Sword & Sworcery EP (22%)
  2. Russian Dancing Men (13%)
  3. Battleheart (12%)
  4. Pulse: Vol 1 (9%)
  5. Helsing’s Fire (8%)
  6. Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space (8%)

Sword & Sworcery EP was a clear winner with 22% of the vote and is arguably one of the best indie games of the year.

Best Free Game

  1. King Arthur’s Gold (29%)
  2. Nitronic Rush (24%)
  3. Stealth Bastard (12%)
  4. Ruins (6%)
  5. WarMage Battlegrounds (5%)
  6. Wonderputt (4%)

This competition was all KAG and Nitronic Rush – they both blew away the competition and were duking it out for first place.  It looks like KAG’s excellent multiplayer action gave it the edge.

Best Graphics

  1. Bastion (45%)
  2. Outland (17%)
  3. Hard Reset (17%)
  4. Pulse (9%)
  5. The Bridge (6%)
  6. TEC 3001 (4%)
  7. TIC: Part 1 (2%)

Bastion strikes again with the largest margin of victory, proving that it not only sounds good but looks good too with 45% of the votes.

Best Sound

  1. Bastion (39%)
  2. Sword & Sworcery EP (11%)
  3. Russian Dancing Men (9%)
  4. To the Moon (9%)
  5. Pulse (8%)
  6. Sequence (5%)

Unsurprisingly, Bastion strummed its way to the top with 41% of your votes!  By far one of hte most memorable things about Bastion is not only the excellent voice-acting of the game’s Narrator, but also the unique and dynamic narration of every player action throughout the game.

Best Computer Game

  1. Space Pirates and Zombies (27%)
  2. Frozen Synapse (19%)
  3. The Binding of Isaac (19%)
  4. To the Moon (9%)
  5. Atom Zombie Smasher (9%)
  6. Gemini Rue (7%)
  7. The Book of Unwritten Tales (6%)
  8. Avadon: Black Fortress (5%)

SPAZ beat down The Binding of Isaac and Frozen Synapse to win 27% of the votes. SPAZ is an action based to down space combat game that adds physics and modern graphics tot he formula. Space Pirates and Zombies is an action based, top down space combat game. It’s similar to the ones we knew and loved in years past, but now using full physics simulation and modern graphics for those oh so pretty explosions.

IGM Game of the YEAR!

Game of the Year is such a hard thing to decide on. 2011 was filled with amazing games and everyone here at IGM argued and toiled over our entire list of nominees to even whittle it down to the 8 nominees.
