Game developers Cryptic Studios are bringing in a new addition to the epic multiverse of the classic card game, “Magic: The Gathering,” by introducing their new MMO action role-playing game titled “Magic: Legends.” The game is set to start its beta program soon, and here's what you need to know about it.

Setting

Magic: Legends is set in the familiar planes from the world of Magic: the Gathering. The game design revolves around the fantasy of being a dynamic Planeswalker, a powerful wizard who wields mighty spells. As you embark on your journey across the planes, you will have to choose your own path and face the consequences of your choice. Your goal along the way is to learn and collect powerful spells that will be used in your battles along the way.

Gameplay

The gameplay follows the same basic principles of the card game – you have to build up to 12 decks of cards that act as a spell for your characters to perform. These decks are all based on specific colors of “mana” (red, blue, green, white, black) that each has unique powers. The journey begins with selecting a starting class. This will determine your initial play style as well as your starting deck of cards (spells).

There are class and character progressions, and like most ARPGs, you gain experience (XP) on completion of quests and missions along your journey. When your planeswalker has earned enough XP, you will level up. You can choose various classes from which you can improve your skillset. Each class comes with its perks known as “class perks” that can be used as special boosts when you are in that particular class.

The game emphasizes on purposeful progression by giving players consequential choices that will directly affect their characters. This ensures that each player has a unique experience in the game based on their choices.

Dive into amazing Realms

Realms are unlocked as you progress through the game. This provides a flexible skill system that directly affects the progression of the characters throughout the course of the game. Once unlocked, it allows your character to learn a comprehensive skill set that will help you in your journey. It also grants you steady access to various workstations, each with its unique functions. As you go on upgrading your character and your realm, you will gain greater flexibility with the mechanics, allowing you to tailor many aspects of the gameplay so that it best suits you. Some awesome features of the Realm include the following:

Projects

These are essentially side quests that help your Planeswalker earn a currency called Planar Mana. The projects run passively while you actively partake in other missions or explore your Realm so that you can collect your rewards while still on a mission.

Workstations

These are places where you can find different projects that you can play in exchange for a resource known as Planar Mana. You earn this currency as a reward on completion of various missions or by making use of the Mana Vault workstation.

Aetheric core

The Aetheric core is like the central work station of the Realm, where all primary functions take place. As its name suggests, it is the core of the realm; therefore, it has the highest level in terms of upgrades, which means any other workstation cannot be built to be as powerful as the Aetheric core. This is the only station where you can create your lands; so, if you want to make it far in the game, you might want to consider investing in this key element.

Lands

Lands represent the overall strength of your character. As you progress in your Realm, you will get more opportunities to connect with more lands. The more lands of a specific color you own, the higher the reward for that color will be.

Mana Vault

This is like a lightning rod that can be used to draw and store Planar Mana for your personal use. If and when you require any Planar mana, you can simply set the Mana Vault to gathering mode, and it will start collecting mana while you engage in other activities. The Mana vault thus keeps your pocket filled throughout your journey.

Besides all these cool features, the creators have promised more exciting mechanics as the game is still under development.
