Exclusive: Red Dwarf Games Announce ‘Tales Of Cosmos’

We spotted Red Dwarf Games‘ debut freebie The Old Tree and immediately fell in love with its style after playing it through. Essentially it is a point and click adventure which draws many similarities with Amanita Design’s fantastical creations. You take on the life of a newborn creature at the bottom of the titular tree and worm your way up to the top, meeting some rather peculiar characters on the way. It’s a great atmospheric piece with plenty of personality – understandably, we wanted more.

We contacted Red Dwarf Games to find out what they were all about and what they had planned for the future. It turns out that The Old Tree is just a fragment of a much larger world…

IGM: Who is Red Dwarf Games and how did you come about?

RDG: We are two developers from Hungary and we are also brothers. We have always been interested in game modding and development and a little more than two years ago we decided to start pursuing our hobby on a professional level.

IGM: What kinds of games are you interested in making and what are your influences?

RDG: Up to this point our game ideas have mostly been adventures, but we’re also interested in other genres. Right now we get most of our inspiration from many a great adventure games including oldies like Coktel Vision’s Gobliiins series and more recent titles like Amanita Design‘s Samorost games – the latter being guessed by a lot of people who played The Old Tree, amazingly.

The Old Tree

IGM: How was The Old Tree construed – the idea, development process etc?

RDG: We consider The Old Tree a spinoff of our main game project Tales of Cosmos, which was already in development by the time we came up with the idea to create a short, free-to-play adventure that would introduce players to the game world. The tree referred to in the title is on a planet that will also make an appearance in our next game.

Everything in The Old Tree (except the Flash engine) was made by the two of us and it took us 6 months to finish the game.

IGM: So Tales of Cosmos is your main project then. What kind of game do you aim for it to be?

RDG: Tales of Cosmos is an open world adventure game taking place in a sci-fi environment. It tells the story of two space travelers stranded in a solar system far away from home.

IGM: How is development going on Tales of Cosmos – how long have you been working on it, how far are you into development?

RDG: We begun developing Tales of Cosmos two years ago and we have still a ways to go.

Tales Of Cosmos

IGM: What are you most proud in regards to your work with Tales of Cosmos so far?

RDG: My favorite feature of Tales of Cosmos is the 2D open world where players can freely explore several planets of various sizes, space travel between those planets is also unrestricted.

IGM: Do you have a rough release date for Tales of Cosmos? What platform will it come out on and will it be free?

RDG: We have no release date estimate at this point. Tales of Cosmos will be released for Windows and possibly other platforms. It will be a commercial game.

So there you have it – Tales of Cosmos is the one to look out for, especially if you enjoyed The Old Tree as much as we did! The game is to be a similarly quaint adventure game that follows two stranded spacemen. Well we say spacemen, but the art at the top of this post actually shows them to be a monkey and a…dog, maybe a bear?

Red Dwarf Games didn’t want to give anything more away about the game but we’re highly anticipating more news from its development! If you haven’t already, go and play through The Old Tree – it’s free and doesn’t take very long.
