Motley Crew: Code Daemons Announces ‘Mael’s Crew’

Code Daemons, the creative studio behind Mighty Fish and Strange World: Castaway, has announced that its newest project, Mael’s Crew, will be coming to PC, Mac, iPhone, Android and web browsers.

By all accounts, the game appears to take the form of a fantasy real-time strategy, albeit with a few twists. Firstly, the player assumes the role of the eponymous Mael, who, in a shocking turn of events of almost Biblical standards, happens to be a baddie. He’s the son of the so-called Evil Lord, a domineering title that leaves little room for imagination, and he’s been unceremoniously evicted by his parents after turning 18 to set up his own treasure dungeon. Evidently, sentimentality isn’t too conventional in Mr. Evil Lord’s household.

Secondly, despite the fact that Code Daemons alludes to its similarities with the tower defense genre, Mael’s Crew doesn’t contain any strategic edifices that can reasonably be termed towers. In their place are monsters that can be hired and distributed within the lengthy corridors of Mael’s dungeon, and you’ll also be able to change their positions and watch them perish horribly. Mmm, expendable miltary forces.

And your enemies? Well, they’re apparently a ragtag gathering of knights, priests and paladins from all four corners of the dysfunctional nation inhabited by Mael and his cohort. They’re trying to steal all that treasure you’ve been hoarding over the course of the game, presumably because church collections and door-to-door charity appeals have dried up or something.

A potential release window hasn’t been publicly discussed yet, but Code Daemons has revealed that the game will be programmed by a two-man team using Unity. We’ve also caught wind of a couple of the in-game units in their concept form, as you can see below.

Cute, right?
