Sci-Fi Satire: Positech Published ‘Redshirt’ Announced

Cliff “Cliffski” Harris (or Positech Games) is introducing a fine looking fleet of satirical sci-fi goodness as the named publisher of Tiniest Shark‘s upcoming Redshirt.

Redshirt fits in the category of forthcoming indie games that are bringing back something the industry has been lacking since the turn of the millennium: satire. Well, just comedy in general to be honest. The game is said to be a “comedy sci-fi sim” which aims its satirical laser firmly in the direction of our social networking lives, albeit it sets the stage aboard a space station.

Gold stars will be rewarded to those who can guess which social networking platform is taking the brunt of the jokes in Redshirt. Here’s a clue: the in-game network is called ‘Spacebook’. The goal of the game is to gather all of those important ‘likes’ as you build relationships and perform acts of appeasement – anything goes in the name of climbing the career ladder. The genre is an odd one to categorize apart from the catch-all “sim”, we’re imagining that the game takes the form of a Facebook-like interface, essentially making it a text-based adventure in many ways. Right? Color us confused.

Apart from this information the game is but an intriguing image at the moment but the premise is certainly brow-raising, if not just for its confident approach to contemporary culture. Yes, we will definitely be keeping our eyes on this one.

You can check out the developer’s website here and find more information on Redshirt over on the official website. Redshirt is expected to release on PC and Mac in Spring/Summer 2012, so make that soon then.
