Think Outside The Box In ‘Yamada Box Legend’, Play For Free Now

An ambitious student project, Yamada Box Legend is a third person adventure/puzzler that is remarkably unique, well-crafted and consistently surprising. Its biggest delight is that it has been released on to the web and is completely free of charge; this is definitely one for a spare half hour.

The premise of Yamada Box Legend is one that follows the Inception-style journey of a young boy who disappears inside a magic box. The world he finds is akin to Wonderland; talking animal cutouts and repressed darker areas lie within. It’s a simple game but with lashings of style and radiates with a rarely-found joy. Each environment and new box you jump into contains a surprise in both content and surreality. One of the puzzles actually involves playing a Game Boy inside the game – I won’t say any more though in fear of spoiling the game.

The developers admit there are some bugs, one of which I came across that meant I couldn’t progress, but they are forgiveable in a game that deserves so much attention. I would happily play through the game again and again.

Please take the time to enjoy Yamada Box Legend – if you think it already looks fantastic then you will be delighted the more you delve into the game.
