Andrew “Redigit” Spinks Says Goodbye To ‘Terraria’, Development Comes To A Halt

Andrew Spinks, or Redigit as he is known, is one of the developers behind the highly successful Terraria and he has just said his farewell to the game and its community as he moves on. What does this mean for the future of the game though?

It’s a well-known fact that what has made Terraria the game it is today, with a huge community of players, is constant development updates, fixes and patches from the developers. Many fell in love with the game as soon as it was released but there has always been a long list of things to be added and improved upon. The game was a living thing due to the strong bond between the developers and the community. Now, however, it seems the beast has been slain…or something equally as dramatic.

Redigit stepped up to the Terraria forums to say his thanks and farewells as he moved on to bigger and better things:

“After a lot of internal debate, we have decided that it is time to move on. My wife and I are due to have another boy soon, and I want to spend some time getting to know him. I also want to spend the time recharging and bettering myself as both a programmer and game designer. I have learned a lot from working on Terraria and plan on using what I’ve learned, building upon it, and moving forward with another, even better project.”

Redigit isn’t the only one who is moving on either, by now you are probably all aware that fellow Terraria developer Tiyuri has announced his new project with his collective team known as Chucklefish. The game in making, Starbound, takes Tiyuri’s art style and combines it into something entirely new and extremely ambitious as can be read here in our previous coverage.

“It’s been an absolute amazing ride working with Redigit”, says Tiyuri in the forums. “And I want to be the first to wish him all the best with the new little guy and all kinds of good luck in the future. It’s been amazing.”

While it all gets a bit soppy on the developer’s side of things, the community are more worried about what this means for the future of Terraria. Despite the constant updates, Terraria still needs bug fixes, multiplayer is yet to be made easier to setup with help from Steam and the community are still demanding new content patches to keep them busy. Most of this demand is to be wiped off the table though, so it seems. The only thing players can cling to is this last promise from Redigit: “we are still planning at least one more bug fix for Terraria.”

So that’s it then. While Terraria will still be a highly playable game, all of the planned updates and fixes after this one bug fix will not be realised. It seems that players will have to await the forthcoming Starbound and whatever it is that Redigit eventually comes up with to transfer their effervescent fandom.
