Here’s All You Need to Know About Expansion Plans for League of Legends

Launched in 2009 by Riot Games, League of Legends continues to remain one of the most popular games to have hit the gaming market. It has a gazillion of downloads, plenty of global players, and one of the most powerful e-sports scenes in the world.

League of Legends has already built an active gaming community over the decade that it has been around. The multiplayer game has grown in strength, and the global LOL fraternity is only loving it more. What's adding to its download numbers is the “free-to-play” option, which Riot Games is offering more year on year.

In a recent announcement, Riot Games said that they are planning to expand the universe of its multiplayer online video game League of Legends that gamers have come to love. The developer intends to bring some new spin-offs through their smaller indie game label called Riot Forge. Interestingly, Riot Games will be in charge of more notable titles, but Riot Forge will take care of the narrative-driven spin-offs.

What are the two spin-offs of League of Legends?

At The Game Awards, Riot Games revealed the very first two indie games that will be released as part of its new Riot Forge label. The first one is Ruined King: A League of Legends Story, developed by Airship Syndicate for console and PC, and the other spin-off is Convergence, created by Double Stallion Games.

As an indie developer, Riot Games doesn't have years of traditional experience in making games. Hence, they are associating with studios who do have the necessary knowledge and a unique style to refresh the look of League of Legends.

Let’s get to know more about these spin-offs here:

1. Ruined King: A League of Legends Story

Ruined King: A League of Legends Story is a narrative-driven, turn-based role-playing game that’s being developed by Airship Syndicate and released by Riot Forge. The game is set after the events of Burning Tides. Players are to control LoL champions and roam around the bustling city of Bilgewater and the peculiar Shadow Isles.

Ruined King: A League of Legends Story features innovative turn-based combat, fan-favorite champions, and beautiful art direction, along with exciting surprises. The game takes the stories of many heroes in the LoL Universe forward and provides a whole new way of experiencing the World of Runeterra.

According to the CEO of Airship Syndicate, Joe Madureira, a new take on turn-based combat, is likely to be seen in Ruined King: A League of Legends Story.

2. Convergence

Convergence is a League of Legends Story spin-off that’s a single-player, action game created by Double Stallion Games and released by Riot Forge. In this game, players will explore the spectacular world of Zaun by assuming the role of Ekko, who is a young inventor with an incredible device to play with time. They follow Ekko’s journey as he is also a fan-favorite LoL Champion, and discover that his unbelievable power to manipulate time comes with many repercussions.

Double Stallion Games is not as famous a studio as Riot Games, having only a few titles under its belt. These include Speed Brawl and Big Action Mega Fight. But the studio is working on Convergence, which is likely to set a new milestone for indie game developers.

Any fan of science fiction will know that messing with time travel makes for sometimes disastrous, but an entertaining plot. This LOL story is designed to be rich with a story-driven narrative—something that’s new in the LOL universe.

Till now, most of the story of the LOL world was confined to text boxes and occasional trailers within the main title. But, Convergence would look like the new title that aims to bring about a change by blending a significant narrative with engaging gameplay.

It seems like Riot Games has been swamped lately with these two new subtitles of League of Legends. It’s interesting to note that they have joined hands with Double Stallion Games to come up with these two indie games. So, it’s expected that players will be getting something quite different from what they have seen so far in the League of Legends world.

Riot Game is not only working on these two titles, but has also announced new games and initiatives, such as creating a mobile version of LOL, an animated series, and other spin-offs. The developer is also working on its first non-League game with “Project A.” However, the developers haven’t announced the release dates of its new creations as yet.
