Get Your Portal On With The Release Of ‘Mari0′

I’m sure some of you are now staring at the title, thinking “he’s finally lost it”, but that’s not the case: Mari0, the Super Mario Bros./Portal cross-over game, has finally been released and is available from the Stabyourself.net website. While I recommend you run over there to grab it ASAP, do continue reading for more details on this wonderful fan creation..

When I first heard about someone combining those two while sticking to 2D, I was a bit sceptic about the whole thing. As it turns out, I had no reason to worry, because the final product is awesome in just about every possible way — having GLaDoS taunt Mario is the one thing that’s really missing, but you can’t have it all. What is in this one however, is quite a bit (including visual filters, one of which is used on the screenshot above):

  • Complete recreation of SMB
  • Elements from Portal
  • Portal gun that shoots portals
  • 4-player simultaneous coop
  • Level Editor that was used to create the levels in the game
  • 33 different hats
  • Downloadable Mappacks
  • Game modifiers for extra fun

That’s right: LEVEL EDITOR! Who hasn’t had the desire to create their own levels in Super Mario Bros. at some point? Can’t wait to see what fans make with this one, especially since the Portal mechanic allows for some seriously twisted level design. While having 4 Marios running around on the screen at once is bound to spell pure chaos most of the time, chances are it’ll also be quite entertaining, but even veterans who have finished the original game in their sleep are bound to find new ways to beat the levels — just imagine the shortcuts one can take, with portals..

Unfortunately the game is not entirely without bugs just yet, but the dev already announced that an update is due later today (March 4th) — wish all devs were that quick in responding to bug reports!
Update: 1.1 is out!

For more information and further updates from Stabyourself.net, here’s their Facebook page, Twitter and official forum; there’s also the RSS feed, for those who still use that.
