An online petition has been launched to allow Austrian gamers access to the XBox Indie channel. While this service is offered in Europe, Austria is one of the countries that is excluded.

The team behind the petition recognise the originality and creativity that Indie titles boast. While they are from small studios with little financial resources, it is thought that these games offer “a refreshing counterpoint” to many retail titles. The petition is hoping to receive 1,000 signatures in support.

Nice idea for the petition but would someone who reads German or Austrian please confirm if the petition is being sent to the Austrian Government or Microsoft.

Does anyone know where the block is?

From reading the little information available the country blocks are usually for legal or political reasons. The petition needs to be sent to the right people to be effective.

Even the mighty Microsoft is unlikely to be able to change Austrian law if that is where the problem lies.

First of all, big thanks to Mark for sharing the news about the petition here.
I’m one of the petition’s founders and I can confirm, that we’ll do whatever we can to send all the subscriptions to the right adress, once we have enough participants. I’ve been in contact with Microsoft for quite a while about that topic but their answers never went beyond “We’re working on it”. So maybe it helps if they see that it’s more than a few people who’d like to enjoy the Indie Games Chanel in Austria.

What other countries don’t have the indie games channel? Does Australia have it? It will be very interesting to see if this petition is successful – good luck!
