Mommy’s Best Games’ latest title to hit the XBLIG marketplace resonates with the thoughts of many a developer’s dissatisfaction at the new Xbox Live Dashboard which has been argued to make it harder to find indie games. The satire-heavy shooter, Game Type, doesn’t stop there though! It can be read further to comment on the apparent money-grabbing side of the corporation that has been demonstrated with the Dashboard’s advert heavy re-design.
The game’s title and box art are actually taken directly from the an interactive icon in a sub-menu of the new dashboard. The developer claims that the Xbox Dashboard re-design has not been a diminutive effort from their perspective due to “Microsoft reserv[ing] a special tile on the dashboard for the game since the new Fall update”. Obviously this is not true but is a deliciously executed attack on Microsoft’s distancing of the indie game section from the front page.
“I’ve been thrilled Microsoft created the special dashboard tile just for our game. It’s such a terrible name which I created as a placeholder while starting the project.” reveals lead designer Nathan Fouts. “With the incongruous stock photo of a woman in a hoodie doing a jump-kick, and the forgettable ‘Game Type’ title, it’s good to know Microsoft was advertising our poorly-named game, and not trying to label the console’s entire digital game storefront. Otherwise, it’d be a horrible match that would simply make no sense and generally lead fewer gamers to find the store and browse on their own terms.”
Essentially, Game Type is an attempt to grab the displeased cries from the many XBLIG developers and deliver them in a way that Microsoft may pay attention to, the media certainly is at least. Mommy’s Best Games further the satire in the gameplay itself as well, described as a “co-op shoot ‘em up in which you pilot the iconic Hoodie Girl to battle the evil MediaBall.” A shiny star and ten points to those who see the obvious dig at not only Microsoft, but the whole mediated corporate world of business men and itchy palms.
The developer urges you to Game Type and so do we, how can you not love a good old dose of satire?
“Check out “Game Type” on Xbox Live Indie Games. Find it in the Xbox 360 Games Marketplace. Or just do a search on it. Otherwise, you’ll probably get lost in the dashboard, stuck watching advertisement for TV shows.”
